Bangor, Maine – Drivers across central and western Maine are facing slick, icy roads right now as melting snow refreezes and light freezing drizzle lingers through the early morning hours.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Caribou and Gray, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect until 4 a.m. to 5 a.m. Monday across much of interior Maine and parts of northern New Hampshire. While steadier snow has tapered off, intermittent light snow and freezing drizzle continue to create a thin glaze of ice on untreated surfaces.
Communities including Bangor, Augusta, Lewiston, Waterville and Skowhegan are seeing the greatest impact, especially on secondary roads, bridges and overpasses where slush from earlier snowfall is freezing as temperatures hover near or below 32 degrees. In western Maine and northern New Hampshire, including Rangeley, Bethel and North Conway, similar conditions are making early travel hazardous.
Roads may appear wet but are likely icy in spots, particularly along I-95, Route 2 and rural roadways. Visibility may also briefly drop in light snow showers.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance and check conditions through NewEngland511 before heading out.
Conditions will gradually improve after sunrise Monday as temperatures rise, but isolated slick spots could linger into the early commute.
