Fowler, IN – A serious crash in Benton County early Thursday morning left a motorcyclist with severe injuries after a collision at a rural intersection.

According to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 6:30 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of US 52 and County Road 300 North, near Fowler. Emergency crews from multiple agencies responded after receiving reports of a vehicle colliding with a motorcycle.

Deputies said they arrived to find the motorcyclist, identified as Javier D. Saldana, 33, of Kentland, lying unconscious in the roadway. Witnesses told authorities the motorcycle was traveling southbound on US 52 when a vehicle entered the intersection.

According to police, the car, driven by Crystal D. Halsema, 52, of Williamsport, allegedly pulled out in front of the motorcycle, causing the crash.

Saldana was airlifted by helicopter to Indiana University Medical Center in Lafayette with severe injuries. Officials said Halsema was not injured in the crash.

Authorities confirmed Halsema was cited for failure to yield. The crash remains under investigation as officials continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The intersection remained an active scene for some time Thursday morning as emergency crews worked to assist the victim and clear the roadway. Drivers in the area experienced delays during the response.
