Springfield, Illinois – Evening travel across central and southern Illinois could be impacted within hours Sunday as scattered thunderstorms develop near and south of I-70 between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a cold front moving into the region will trigger isolated strong to severe storms during that three-hour window. While widespread severe weather is not expected, a few storms may produce wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail near quarter size.

Cities including Springfield, Decatur, Effingham, and Champaign sit near the northern edge of the risk zone, with higher chances farther south toward areas like Salem and Olney. Motorists along I-55, I-57, and I-70 should prepare for brief downpours, reduced visibility, and sudden wind gusts during the evening commute.

Outdoor plans may need adjustment as storms approach quickly and intensify in pockets. Residents are urged to monitor alerts, move indoors when thunder is heard, and secure loose outdoor items ahead of the storms.

The threat diminishes later Sunday night as the cold front clears the region, bringing calmer and cooler conditions into early Monday. Additional updates remain possible if storm strength increases.
