Dyer, Nevada – A magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck rural western Nevada at 12:44 p.m. Sunday, sending light shaking through parts of Esmeralda County and nearby California border communities.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey and Nevada Seismological Laboratory, the quake was centered about 15 kilometers north of Dyer at a depth of 15.9 kilometers. The event was automatically reviewed and registered shortly after it occurred, with initial community reports indicating weak but noticeable shaking.

The epicenter sits in a sparsely populated stretch of Esmeralda County, though residents in Dyer and areas stretching toward Mono County, California, may have felt brief vibrations. No immediate damage or injuries have been reported, and infrastructure impacts appear minimal at this time.

Seismologists note that earthquakes of this magnitude are typically considered minor, but they can still be felt indoors, especially in quiet rural settings. Light rattling of windows, small objects shifting, and brief ground motion are common at this level.

Drivers along remote areas near State Route 264 and U.S. Route 6 likely experienced no disruption, but officials advise staying alert for any aftershocks, which can occur within minutes to hours following the initial quake.

Residents are encouraged to report shaking through the USGS “Did You Feel It?” system to help refine intensity maps and improve real-time data collection.

While no alerts or advisories are currently active, officials say additional seismic activity cannot be ruled out. Monitoring will continue through Sunday evening, and updates will be issued if conditions change.
