Hastings, Nebraska – A dangerous stretch for wildfire spread begins by 11 a.m. Saturday, as hot, dry air and strengthening winds create critical fire conditions across central Nebraska.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect from 11 a.m. Saturday through 4 a.m. Sunday. Relative humidity could drop as low as 9 percent during peak heating, while southwest winds increase to 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph during the day.
Conditions worsen Saturday night as winds shift to the north and intensify, with gusts reaching 35 to 40 mph. This wind shift could cause any ongoing fires to change direction quickly, increasing the خطر for rapid spread and making containment more difficult.
The highest risk includes areas along and south of Interstate 80, including Hastings, Kearney, Grand Island, and surrounding communities where dry fuels are readily available.
Residents should avoid outdoor burning and any activity that could create sparks. Fires that start under these conditions can spread بسرعة and become dangerous in a short amount of time.
Critical fire danger will persist into early Sunday morning, with additional alerts possible as conditions evolve.
