Elkins, WV – Subfreezing temperatures will move into West Virginia’s mountain counties late Sunday night, with lows dropping to 29°F by early Monday, threatening crops and outdoor plumbing before sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Freeze Watch is in effect from late Sunday night through Monday morning for portions of southeast Webster, Pocahontas, and Randolph counties. The coldest temperatures are expected in higher elevations and sheltered valleys.

Communities including Elkins, Snowshoe, and Harman will see the greatest risk between midnight and 8 a.m. Monday, when temperatures dip below freezing long enough to damage or kill sensitive vegetation. While major roadways are expected to remain dry, rural areas could see frost develop on exposed surfaces.

Agricultural areas and home gardens face the highest impact. Early spring crops and budding trees may suffer damage if left unprotected. Residents should cover plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and insulate exposed outdoor plumbing. Pipes in unheated areas are especially vulnerable during prolonged subfreezing conditions.

Temperatures will recover after mid-morning Monday, but the overnight cold snap may prompt additional alerts if conditions intensify. Residents should monitor updates and be prepared for expanded freeze warnings.
