State College, PA – Temperatures will drop below freezing late Sunday night, with lows falling to 26°F by early Monday and creating immediate risk for crops, gardens, and outdoor plumbing across central and northern Pennsylvania.
According to the National Weather Service in State College, a Freeze Watch is in effect from late Sunday night through Monday morning for areas including State College, DuBois, Clearfield, and Bradford. A second, colder Freeze Watch follows late Monday night through Tuesday morning, when temperatures could plunge as low as 22°F in northern counties and into the mid-20s farther south.
The first round of freezing temperatures will develop after midnight Sunday night, with the coldest readings in higher elevations and rural valleys across Cameron, Elk, and McKean counties. By Monday night into Tuesday morning, the freeze expands southward into cities including Altoona, Johnstown, Williamsport, Harrisburg, York, and Lancaster.
Subfreezing temperatures over consecutive nights could kill unprotected vegetation and severely impact early planting. Residents should cover plants, bring sensitive vegetation indoors, and insulate or drain outdoor plumbing. Agricultural areas across Centre, Blair, and Lycoming counties face heightened risk due to the duration of the cold.
Temperatures recover after each morning, but repeated overnight freezes increase the likelihood of damage. Additional alerts may be issued as confidence grows in the extended cold through Tuesday morning.
