Hastings, NE – A widespread freeze is gripping central Nebraska and parts of north central Kansas early Saturday, with temperatures dropping low enough to threaten crops and infrastructure before mid-morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Freeze Warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. CDT Saturday, with lows dipping to around 20 degrees. The coldest readings are expected north and west of the Tri-Cities, including areas near Ord, Broken Bow, and Lexington.

Cities such as Grand Island, Hastings, Kearney, York, and Holdrege are all experiencing sub-freezing conditions, placing early spring crops and gardens at risk. Across the region, vegetation that has already begun growing is especially vulnerable to frost damage.

Residents should act quickly to protect plants and drain outdoor plumbing systems, including hoses and irrigation lines, to prevent costly damage. Rural and low-lying areas may see the most intense cold through sunrise.

Temperatures are expected to climb after mid-morning, but additional cold snaps remain possible as unstable spring weather continues across the Plains.
