Springfield, Illinois – A fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms could bring 75 mph wind gusts, hail, and a possible tornado threat across central Illinois starting late this afternoon and continuing into the overnight hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Level 3 out of 5 severe weather risk is in place, with storms expected to develop near the Mississippi River by late afternoon before sweeping east across the state. The most intense storms are likely between 3 p.m. and 1 a.m., with isolated activity possible even earlier.
Communities including Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington, and Decatur sit within the highest risk zone, where damaging winds could down trees and power lines. Large hail and a few brief tornadoes are also possible, particularly within stronger storm cells embedded in the main line. Localized flooding may develop in urban and low-lying areas due to heavy rainfall.
Drivers along I-55, I-72, and I-74 should be prepared for sudden visibility drops and hazardous travel conditions during the evening commute.
Residents are urged to stay weather aware, have multiple ways to receive warnings, and be ready to move indoors quickly if alerts are issued.
Storms are expected to weaken after 1 a.m., but additional advisories may be issued as the system moves through.
