Huntsville, AL – Temperatures are set to plunge below freezing across northern Alabama tonight, putting crops, gardens, and outdoor plumbing at risk before sunrise Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, a Freeze Warning remains in effect from 9 p.m. Tuesday until 9 a.m. Wednesday for much of north central, northeast, and northwest Alabama. Overnight lows are expected to drop as low as 27 degrees, cold enough to damage or kill sensitive vegetation.
Cities including Huntsville, Decatur, Florence, Cullman, and Scottsboro will see the coldest stretch between midnight and daybreak, when frost formation becomes widespread. Rural and low-lying areas could experience even colder pockets, increasing the risk to early spring planting.
The cold snap follows recent mild weather, leaving many plants vulnerable without protection. Residents are urged to cover tender vegetation, bring potted plants indoors, and insulate or drip outdoor pipes to prevent freezing.
Conditions will gradually improve after sunrise Wednesday, but additional cold mornings remain possible this week, keeping agricultural impacts a concern across the Tennessee Valley.
