Davenport, Iowa – Roads across eastern Iowa and western Illinois could become impassable by early evening Friday as repeated thunderstorms dump heavy rain at rates exceeding 1 inch per hour.

According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, two rounds of storms are expected to develop between 1 p.m. and 10 p.m., with the heaviest rainfall likely during the evening commute. A slight risk for flash flooding covers much of the region, especially north of Highway 30 and in urban areas where drainage systems can quickly become overwhelmed.

Cities including Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Davenport, Moline, and Burlington face the highest risk for rapid water buildup. Major routes such as I-80, I-74, and U.S. 61 could see ponding or temporary closures if rainfall intensifies. Some locations may pick up an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain by late Friday night, on top of already saturated ground.

Storms may also bring damaging winds over 70 mph and isolated tornadoes, adding to the danger after 5 p.m. as a more organized line moves through the region.

Residents should avoid driving through flooded roadways and monitor alerts closely. The flood threat will continue into the overnight hours, with river levels expected to rise into early next week and additional advisories possible.
