Iowa – Warm air surges north and winds pick up quickly, setting the stage for severe storms that could hit the Quad Cities by late afternoon, disrupting travel and raising flood concerns.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe weather is in place today across eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois. Damaging winds and tornadoes are the primary threats, with localized flash flooding also possible. Southerly winds may gust up to 40 mph ahead of storm development, especially along I-80 and I-74 corridors .

Davenport, Bettendorf, Rock Island, and Moline will see storms develop later today, with rain chances climbing to 90% into the evening. Heavy downpours could quickly drop between a quarter and half an inch of rain, overwhelming drainage in urban areas. Drivers should prepare for sudden visibility drops and ponding on roads.

Flooding is already ongoing along area rivers, including the Wapsipinicon and North Skunk Rivers, where moderate flooding is occurring or expected. Some roads near riverbanks may already be impacted, and conditions could worsen with additional rainfall.

After storms clear, a sharp cooldown follows. Saturday turns breezy and cooler, with highs near 50°F. By Sunday morning, temperatures fall into the 30s, bringing widespread frost that could impact early-season plants.

Early next week brings a rebound, with sunshine and highs returning to the 60s and 70s.
