Omaha, Nebraska – Gardeners and homeowners across eastern Nebraska have a narrow window Friday evening to protect sensitive plants as temperatures plunge below freezing by daybreak Saturday, with lows expected to hit 27°F in parts of the Omaha metro.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, widespread frost and subfreezing conditions will develop between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. Saturday, with a second round of near-freezing temperatures returning early Sunday. Officials warn that any unprotected vegetation could suffer damage, especially in low-lying and rural areas.
Across Douglas and Sarpy counties, temperatures are expected to range from 30°F to 33°F early Saturday, with colder pockets northwest of the city dipping into the upper 20s. Light rain may mix with snow in some areas Saturday morning, though accumulation is expected to remain minimal. Roads are not expected to see major impacts, but elevated surfaces could briefly cool near freezing.
Residents are urged to cover plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and disconnect garden hoses in areas where temperatures fall below 32°F. Early morning commuters should remain aware of localized slick spots, especially on bridges.
The cold snap lingers into early Sunday with another round of frost possible before a gradual warm-up begins. Additional advisories may be issued if temperatures trend colder overnight.
