HARRISONVILLE, Mo. — A high-speed pursuit on Interstate 49 ended with a K9 search and arrest late Thursday night in Harrisonville.
According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began just after 10 p.m. when a deputy assigned to the Criminal Apprehension Unit attempted to stop a vehicle for multiple traffic violations near Southwest Outer Road and Pine Street in Archie.
Authorities say the driver allegedly failed to yield to the deputy’s emergency equipment, prompting a pursuit. The vehicle fled northbound on I-49 at a high rate of speed.
Investigators said the suspect eventually crashed the vehicle into a field near Southwest Outer Road and 283rd Street in Harrisonville before fleeing on foot.
With assistance from a K9 unit, deputies searched the area and located the suspect near the 283rd Street overpass, where he was taken into custody without further incident.
The suspect was identified as 29-year-old Michael Cox.
According to the sheriff’s office, Cox allegedly faces multiple charges, including aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a stop or detention (felony), operating a motor vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.
Authorities said Cox is currently being held at the Cass County Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond.
Officials also clarified the pursuit was unrelated to a separate multi-vehicle crash reported around the same time north of State Route 291 in Harrisonville. The Harrisonville Police Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol handled that incident, though a Cass County deputy reportedly assisted one injured individual.
The pursuit briefly affected traffic in the area, a corridor commonly used by local commuters and young drivers traveling between Harrisonville and Kansas City.
