La Porte County, Ind. — A high-speed police pursuit early Saturday along U.S. 20 ended in a crash and two arrests, prompting a drone search and criminal charges, according to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say the incident began around 12:40 a.m. Saturday when Deputy Dylan Hisick observed a vehicle allegedly traveling above the speed limit while heading west on U.S. 20 near Wilhelm Road. According to the sheriff’s office, a speed measurement device confirmed the vehicle was exceeding the posted limit.

When a traffic stop was attempted along U.S. 20 west of State Road 39, the vehicle allegedly fled, triggering a pursuit. Deputies say the vehicle continued eastbound on U.S. 20 at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.

The pursuit ended near U.S. 20 and County Road 500 East when the vehicle allegedly drove through a grassy median, crossed eastbound lanes, left the roadway and crashed into a roadside ditch.

Investigators said a male driver and female passenger exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Deputy Hisick reportedly apprehended the passenger near Oak Knoll Road, while the driver continued running into a nearby field.

Deputy Austin Howell deployed a department-issued drone, which located the driver about half a mile from the crash near the U.S. 20 and State Road 2 “Dogbone” interchange, authorities said. Deputies reported the driver had allegedly shed his clothing while fleeing and was taken into custody wearing only underwear.

The driver was identified as 28-year-old Kevin D. Reed of South Bend, while the passenger was identified as 19-year-old Anttianee T. Huey, also of South Bend.

According to the sheriff’s office, Reed faces multiple charges including resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, operating while intoxicated (prior), operating while intoxicated, and leaving the scene of a crash. Huey was arrested on a resisting law enforcement charge.

Both were transported to a hospital for medical clearance before being booked into the La Porte County Jail, officials said.

The case stems from an OWI enforcement initiative funded through the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, authorities said.

High-speed pursuits along major corridors like U.S. 20 can affect overnight freight traffic and early commuters traveling between La Porte County and South Bend.
