Champaign, Illinois – A 15-year-old was shot late Wednesday morning on Mattis Avenue, prompting an ongoing police investigation and a call for public assistance.
According to the Champaign Police Department, officers were dispatched at 11:26 a.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2026, to the 1500 block of North Mattis Avenue following reports of a shooting with injuries. When officers arrived, they located the teen with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and provided emergency medical aid until he was transported to a local hospital. He remains hospitalized in stable condition.
A short time later, officers located a scene with evidence of gunfire near the intersection of Winston Drive and Summit Ridge Road.
Investigators said the teen was walking in the area when an unknown subject or subjects allegedly opened fire, striking him. The victim fled on foot while calling for help. The suspect or suspects left the area before officers arrived. Police said the motive remains under investigation.
Officers continue canvassing the surrounding neighborhood for witnesses and surveillance footage. No arrests have been made.
