South Bend, IN Hit-and-Run Seriously Injures Pedestrian

South Bend, Indiana – A hit-and-run crash seriously injured a pedestrian on the city’s northwest side Wednesday afternoon, prompting an active investigation and temporary road closure.

According to the South Bend Police Department, officers were called around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday to Portage and Leland avenues on a report that a male had been struck by a vehicle.

Preliminary information indicates the victim was performing work along the side of the road when he was hit. Police said the vehicle involved did not stop at the scene. Officers are working to identify and locate the driver.

St. Joseph County’s Fatal Alcohol Crash Team, known as FACT, is actively investigating the incident, according to police. Authorities have not released the victim’s condition beyond describing the injuries as serious.

The intersection was temporarily closed following the crash and was expected to reopen to traffic around 4 p.m. Wednesday. Motorists in the area experienced delays during the afternoon commute.
