Tillamook County, Ore. – The Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phishing scam targeting customers of the county’s Department of Community Development.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, scammers are sending fraudulent emails posing as legitimate invoice requests from the Department of Community Development (DCD). Officials said the emails appear to seek payment for department-related fees and services.
Authorities emphasized that the Tillamook County Department of Community Development will not request wire transfers for payment of fees. Official county emails will include the domain “@tillamookcounty.gov.”
Community members are urged to carefully review the sender’s email address before responding to any invoice or payment request. Anyone who receives a suspicious message claiming to be from DCD should contact the department directly before taking action.
“Our goal is to keep the public informed by posting known scam examples on the DCD homepage so residents can better protect themselves,” said Melissa Jenck in a statement.
Residents with questions or those wishing to verify a communication can contact the Department of Community Development at 503-842-3408.
The Sheriff’s Office encourages the public to report suspected fraudulent activity. Officials say taking time to verify a request can help prevent financial loss and identity theft. The alert may be particularly relevant to contractors, property owners, and small business operators who regularly interact with the department.
