Springfield, MO – Drivers along I-44 and US-65 could face sudden 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail by midafternoon Tuesday as strong thunderstorms push into southwest Missouri.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, a few isolated strong to marginally severe thunderstorms are possible Tuesday afternoon and evening. The main threats include hail up to 1 inch in diameter and wind gusts reaching 60 mph, especially between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.
The greatest risk zone stretches from near the Kansas border east toward the Lake of the Ozarks region, placing communities such as Springfield, Joplin, Branson and Lebanon in the potential impact area. Storms may rapidly intensify as they track along and north of Interstate 44, with additional development possible near Highway 60 and Route 13.
Wind gusts of 60 mph can down small tree limbs and blow unsecured objects into roadways. Brief heavy rain may also reduce visibility below one mile, creating hazardous travel on US-160 and I-49 during the late afternoon commute. Hail up to the size of quarters could dent vehicles and damage roofs or siding.
Residents should secure outdoor furniture, park vehicles in garages if available and ensure mobile devices are fully charged in case isolated power outages occur. Have multiple ways to receive warnings, including weather alerts enabled on smartphones.
Storm chances diminish later Tuesday night, but additional updates or advisories may be issued if storm intensity increases during peak heating hours.
