Vincennes, Indiana – Slick roads are already developing across southwest Indiana as snow, sleet and light freezing rain continue through 9 a.m., slowing the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Monday for Sullivan, Greene, Knox, Daviess, Martin and Lawrence counties. Forecasters expect up to 1 inch of snow along with a light glaze of ice.
The mix of precipitation is coating untreated bridges and overpasses first, especially along U.S. Route 41, U.S. Route 50 and State Road 37. Communities including Vincennes, Bedford, Washington and Bloomfield may encounter slick secondary roads before sunrise. Even a thin layer of ice can significantly reduce traction and increase stopping distances.
Drivers should slow down, allow extra following distance and check Indiana 511 for real-time road conditions before heading out. Road crews are treating major routes, but untreated rural roads may remain slippery through mid-morning. Conditions are expected to gradually improve after 9 a.m. as precipitation tapers and temperatures rise above freezing.
