Indianapolis, Indiana – Wet snow is coating roads across the Indianapolis metro early Monday, creating slick travel conditions that could slow the morning commute through 9 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. for Putnam, Hendricks, Marion, Hancock, Henry, Morgan, Johnson, Shelby and Rush counties. Forecasters expect around 1 inch of wet snow, with locally higher amounts possible in isolated spots.

Snow is sticking to untreated bridges and overpasses first, especially along Interstate 65, Interstate 70 and Interstate 74. Areas including downtown Indianapolis, Greenwood, Plainfield, Greenfield and Shelbyville may experience reduced traction before sunrise. Wet snow can compact quickly under traffic, increasing stopping distances during peak travel hours.

Drivers should slow down, allow extra following distance and check Indiana 511 for live road updates before heading out. Road crews are treating primary routes, but secondary roads may remain slick through mid-morning. Conditions are expected to gradually improve after 9 a.m. as snowfall tapers and temperatures edge above freezing.
