Indianapolis, Indiana – Drivers across central Indiana should prepare for wet snow late Sunday night that could coat roads before sunrise Monday, creating slick spots during the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, up to 2 inches of dense, wet snow will fall from late Sunday night through Monday morning across much of the region. Areas under the Special Weather Statement include Marion, Hendricks, Hamilton, Johnson, Morgan, Monroe and Vigo counties, including Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Bloomington, Columbus and Shelbyville.
Snow is expected to begin after midnight, with the steadiest snowfall between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. Monday. Roads may remain mainly wet at first, but heavier bursts could reduce visibility and allow slush to accumulate on untreated surfaces. Elevated roadways along I-465, I-70 and I-65 may become slick before the height of the commute.
Drivers should allow extra stopping distance and plan additional travel time early Monday. INDOT crews will monitor pavement temperatures and treat major highways as needed.
Snow should taper by mid to late morning Monday, with conditions gradually improving by midday. Additional statements could follow if snowfall rates increase overnight.
