St. Louis, Missouri – Dangerous fire weather conditions are expected across eastern Missouri and southwest Illinois today, as gusty southwest winds, very low humidity and dry vegetation combine to create an elevated to critical fire risk through early evening.
Wind gusts between 25 and 35 mph are forecast to develop late this morning and persist into the afternoon, especially along the I-44, I-55 and I-70 corridors. At the same time, relative humidity values are expected to drop significantly, allowing fires to spread rapidly if ignited.
These conditions mean any spark could quickly grow into a fast-moving grass or brush fire. Open burning is strongly discouraged across the region today. Even small flames from debris burning, campfires or discarded cigarettes could escape control under these weather conditions.
Drivers along I-64 and I-270 may notice areas of blowing dust or smoke if fires develop nearby, potentially reducing visibility. Rural areas with dormant winter vegetation are particularly vulnerable.
Officials urge residents to postpone any outdoor burning and avoid activities that could generate sparks, including welding or using equipment on dry grass. Properly dispose of cigarettes and secure trailer chains to prevent roadside sparks.
Fire crews remain on alert as the combination of wind and dry air increases the likelihood that fires could spread quickly before containment.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve after sunset as winds ease and humidity levels recover. Until then, residents across the St. Louis metro area and surrounding communities should use extreme caution and remain vigilant to prevent accidental fire starts.
