Chicago, Ill. – Drivers and homeowners across northern Illinois face a rapid weather swing, with 35 mph wind gusts and highs near 60 degrees Friday increasing fire danger before snow chances and a sharp freeze arrive by Saturday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, unseasonably warm temperatures combined with dry air and strong southwest winds will peak Friday afternoon. The highest fire risk will develop between noon and 6 p.m., especially near major corridors including I-90, I-55 and I-80, where dry roadside grasses could ignite quickly. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and secure equipment that may cause sparks.

A cold front will move in Saturday, dropping highs into the 30s and 40s. Light snow may develop north of I-88 during the afternoon, with better chances for accumulation north of I-80 Saturday night into early Sunday. While snowfall totals appear light, even minor accumulation could create slick stretches on untreated roads and elevated surfaces, particularly along I-39 and I-94.

By early Sunday, temperatures will fall into the teens and lower 20s, creating refreeze concerns for any lingering moisture. Commuters should allow extra travel time and check road conditions before heading out.

Conditions moderate early next week, with highs climbing back into the upper 30s and lower 40s by Tuesday. Additional advisories are possible as the weekend system approaches and snow placement becomes more certain.
