Juneau, Alaska – Snow will intensify across Southeast Alaska this afternoon, and roads in Juneau could become snow-packed and difficult to navigate before the evening commute as temperatures drop to freezing.

According to the National Weather Service in Juneau, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the City and Borough of Juneau until 6 a.m. AKST Thursday, with 4 to 10 inches of additional accumulation possible. Snow showers streaming in from the Gulf will become more widespread as colder air pushes south, changing mixed precipitation to all snow at sea level.

Sitka and Prince of Wales Island are under an advisory from 6 p.m. Wednesday until 4 p.m. Thursday, where 4 to 7 inches of snow and wind gusts up to 35 mph could reduce visibility and impact both the morning and evening commutes. In Skagway, 4 to 6 inches are expected through 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the heaviest totals along the Klondike Highway and White Pass as northerly winds drop temperatures to freezing.

Elfin Cove and Pelican could see 4 to 7 inches by 6 a.m. Thursday as showers turn steadier overnight.

Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check 511.alaska.gov for updated road conditions. Advisories remain in effect into Thursday morning, and additional bursts of heavy snow could create localized higher totals.
