Albany, NY – Drivers in the Adirondacks could encounter sudden snow squalls and slick roads during the evening commute and overnight hours as a cold front sweeps across northern New York.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Hamilton, northern Herkimer and northern Fulton counties until 7 a.m. EST Thursday. An additional 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected, with scattered snow showers and isolated squalls developing through early evening. A brief burst of lake effect snow will follow overnight before shifting south of the advisory area.

Communities including Old Forge, Long Lake, Big Moose and Wells may see quick reductions in visibility during heavier squalls. Roads could turn snow-covered in a short period of time, especially on secondary routes and untreated surfaces. Portions of Route 28 and other Adirondack roadways may become slick as temperatures drop behind the front.

Motorists should slow down, allow extra braking distance and remain alert for rapidly changing conditions, particularly after sunset when temperatures fall.

Snow showers taper toward daybreak Thursday, but icy patches may linger into the morning commute.
