Buffalo, NY – Narrow bands of lake effect snow could quickly drop up to 5 inches across parts of Wayne and northern Cayuga counties overnight, setting up a slick and potentially slow Thursday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. EST Thursday. Snow will transition to localized lake effect bands tonight, with the most persistent areas picking up 2 to 5 inches of accumulation.
Communities including Newark and Fair Haven may see rapidly changing conditions as lake effect bands shift. Visibility can drop sharply in heavier bursts, while areas just a few miles away remain dry. Routes such as State Route 104 and other east-west roadways near Lake Ontario are especially prone to quick snow cover when bands lock in place.
Drivers should prepare for sudden whiteouts, reduce speed and allow extra following distance. Check New York 511 for real-time road updates before the morning commute.
Lake effect snow tapers after sunrise Thursday, but slick spots may linger as crews work to clear treated and untreated roads.
