Duluth, Minnesota – Roads across the Northland will turn snow-covered and slick by midnight as steady snowfall spreads across northeastern Minnesota and parts of northwest Wisconsin, threatening the Tuesday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect from midnight tonight until 3 p.m. Tuesday for Cook, Lake and St. Louis counties in Minnesota. Snow totals will range from 3 to 6 inches in northern Cook and Lake counties, with isolated amounts up to 7 inches in higher terrain near Isabella. Central and northern St. Louis County, including Ely and Hibbing, can expect 2 to 5 inches. Southern Lake County, including Two Harbors and Silver Bay, will see 2 to 5 inches. In Iron County, Wisconsin, including Hurley, a separate advisory runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday with 2 to 4 inches expected.

Snow will fall heaviest late tonight through early Tuesday afternoon, reducing visibility and covering highways including U.S. Highway 61, Highway 53 and rural routes near the Boundary Waters and Voyageurs National Park. While the snow will be lighter and less dense than last week’s system, untreated roads will quickly become slippery.

Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check 511mn.org or 511wi.gov before traveling. Advisories expire by mid-afternoon Tuesday, though slick spots may linger into the evening.
