Williamsburg, Va. – Light snow is still coating roads across eastern Virginia early Monday, keeping bridges and secondary streets slick even after a stronger storm warning was cancelled overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Monday for portions of the Northern Neck, Middle Peninsula and lower Tidewater, including Westmoreland, Richmond, Northumberland, Lancaster, Gloucester, Middlesex, Mathews, King and Queen, Essex, James City and York counties. Forecasters expect up to 1 inch of additional snow, with wind gusts reaching 35 to 40 mph.
While snowfall totals are lower than previously anticipated, gusty winds may blow snow across roadways and reduce visibility at times. Slick conditions are possible along Route 17, Route 33 and Interstate 64 near Williamsburg and Yorktown, especially on elevated surfaces. The advisory covers both the morning and evening commutes.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check 511 for updated road conditions. The advisory continues through 7 p.m., and any lingering snow showers could briefly worsen travel before tapering later this evening.
