South Bend, Ind. – Lake effect snow bands are sweeping across northern Indiana and southwest Michigan early Monday, coating highways and creating slick conditions through the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. EST Monday, or noon CST, for Starke, Marshall, La Porte and St. Joseph counties in Indiana, along with Cass and Berrien counties in Michigan. Additional snowfall of 1 to 3 inches is expected, with wind gusts up to 30 mph contributing to areas of blowing snow.
Roads along Interstate 80/90, U.S. 31 and U.S. 20 are seeing fluctuating visibility as narrow bands move inland from Lake Michigan. Conditions can change quickly within a few miles, especially in Berrien County near Benton Harbor and in La Porte County closer to the lakeshore. Bridges and overpasses are particularly prone to icy buildup.
Drivers should reduce speed, allow extra following distance and check 511 for the latest road conditions before heading out. The advisory remains in effect through early afternoon, and lingering snow showers could continue to create isolated slick spots even after the main bands weaken.
