Marquette, MI – Lake effect snow bands will continue to shift across Upper Michigan tonight, creating sudden whiteout conditions along key highways before the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. Monday for Keweenaw, northern Houghton, Baraga, Ontonagon, Gogebic and Alger counties. Additional snowfall between 1 and 3 inches is expected, with the highest amounts north of Houghton along US-41 and in Baraga County north and east of US-41. Winds will gust up to 40 mph along the north-facing Keweenaw shoreline, producing blowing and drifting snow.
In Marquette County, the advisory continues until 7 a.m. Monday. While most areas will see up to 2 inches, localized totals may reach 6 inches north of US-41. M-28 between Marquette and Munising could see sharply reduced visibility as snow accumulates on lakeshore ice and northerly winds push snow across the roadway.
Farther west, Gogebic and Ontonagon counties may pick up 1 to 3 inches, especially north of US-2 and west of M-64, leading to slick travel near Ironwood and Ontonagon.
Drivers should slow down and prepare for rapidly changing visibility over short distances. While the heaviest bands taper after midnight in some areas, lingering snow showers and drifting could still impact early Monday travel.
