South Bend, IN – Lake effect snow will continue stacking up overnight, creating slick roads and reduced visibility ahead of the Monday morning commute across northern Indiana and southwest Michigan.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. EST Monday for Starke, Marshall, La Porte and St. Joseph counties in Indiana, along with Cass and Berrien counties in Michigan. Additional snowfall between 2 and 4 inches is expected, with localized totals up to 6 inches where persistent bands set up. Winds will gust to around 25 mph, causing areas of blowing and drifting snow.

Roads along U.S. 31, the Indiana Toll Road and I-94 in Berrien County may become snow-covered before sunrise. In South Bend, La Porte and Niles, bursts of heavier lake effect snow could quickly reduce visibility and create slick bridges and overpasses during peak travel times.

In Elkhart County, the advisory expires at 1 a.m. Monday, with up to 2 inches of additional accumulation possible before snow tapers.

Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check 511 for updated road conditions. Snow showers will gradually diminish by early afternoon, but untreated roads could remain slippery beyond the advisory window.
