Lewisburg, West Virginia – Snow-covered roads and wind gusts up to 50 mph could create hazardous travel across parts of southwest Virginia and southern West Virginia through 1 a.m. Tuesday, with conditions worsening overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a strengthening coastal storm moving north from the Carolinas will spread accumulating snow across Bland, Giles and Bath counties in Virginia, along with Monroe and eastern Greenbrier counties in West Virginia. Total snowfall could reach up to 3 inches before tapering early Tuesday.

Temperatures will fall to near 20 degrees Sunday night, and combined with gusty winds, wind chills are expected to dip into the single digits late Sunday night into Monday. Snow will stick to untreated roads and bridges, especially along U.S. 460 near Pearisburg, Interstate 64 near Lewisburg and Route 219 through Union and Hot Springs.

The Monday morning and evening commutes face the greatest risk for delays as snow bands move through and winds blow snow across roadways. Gusty conditions could also snap tree branches and lead to isolated power outages.

Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check 511 for updated road conditions. The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. Tuesday, and additional updates may follow if snowfall rates increase.
