Greenfield, Massachusetts – Roads across Franklin County and western Hampshire County could become snow-packed and dangerous by late Sunday afternoon as heavy snow and 55 mph wind gusts move in by 4 p.m., threatening the Monday commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 4 p.m. Sunday through 7 a.m. Tuesday for western and eastern Franklin County and western Hampshire County. Forecasters expect 8 to 14 inches of snow, with strong winds capable of creating blowing snow and reduced visibility.

In Greenfield and Orange, snowfall rates may reach 1 inch per hour Sunday night, quickly covering Route 2 and Interstate 91. In Charlemont and Chesterfield, higher elevations could see deeper drifts as gusty winds sweep across exposed roadways. Officials warn that travel may become very difficult to impossible at times, particularly during the Monday morning and evening commutes.

Strong winds could also damage tree limbs and cause isolated power outages. Residents should secure loose outdoor items and prepare for potential service interruptions.

If you must travel, carry extra food, water and a flashlight in your vehicle. Road conditions may slowly improve after daybreak Tuesday, but additional advisories remain possible as cleanup continues across western Massachusetts.
