Caribou, Maine – Drivers across central and southern interior Maine could face snow-covered roads by midday Monday as a winter system spreads accumulating snow into the region ahead of the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Monday morning through Tuesday morning for Southern Piscataquis, Southeast Aroostook and Central Penobscot counties. Forecasters say 5 to 8 inches of snow is possible, with wind gusts up to 35 mph that could reduce visibility at times.

Snow is expected to overspread communities including Houlton, Lincoln, Sherman, Dover-Foxcroft and Milo during the day Monday, becoming steadier and heavier at times by late afternoon and evening. Roads across Route 2, I-95 near Medway and secondary highways could turn slick as temperatures remain cold enough for steady accumulation.

The Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes will likely see the greatest impacts, especially where snow bands briefly intensify. Drivers should allow extra time, keep headlights on in falling snow and carry winter emergency supplies.

Snow is expected to taper Tuesday morning, though additional advisories or warnings may be issued as the system tracks through.
