Accomack County, Virginia – Travel along Virginia’s Eastern Shore could become treacherous by 1 p.m. Sunday as heavy snow and 50 mph wind gusts sweep into Accomack County, creating whiteout conditions that may shut down stretches of Route 13 through Monday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday until 7 p.m. Monday. Snow totals between 4 and 8 inches are expected, but strong northwest winds gusting up to 45 to 50 mph will cause blowing and drifting snow, sharply reducing visibility.

Across the Eastern Shore, exposed roadways and bridges will ice over quickly Sunday afternoon. In communities from Chincoteague to Onancock, wind-driven snow may pile into drifts, making rural roads nearly impassable. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel corridor could also see sudden visibility drops as squalls intensify.

The Monday morning and evening commutes face significant disruption. Gusty winds may snap small tree limbs and lead to isolated power outages.

Officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel, charge electronic devices, and prepare winter emergency kits with blankets, water and food. If stranded, stay inside your vehicle and call 511 for the latest Virginia road conditions.

Blizzard conditions are expected to persist until 7 p.m. Monday, and additional alerts could follow as the storm unfolds.
