Honolulu, Hawaii – Drivers across Oahu and Kauai face rapidly rising water before sunrise Saturday as torrential rain overwhelms streams and threatens major roadways.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, a Flash Flood Warning remains in effect for Oahu until 6:45 a.m. HST and for Kauai until 6 a.m. HST. Radar and automated gauges detected rainfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour over the Koolau Mountains and windward Kauai. Emergency alerts were activated as streams surged and flooding either began or is expected shortly.

On Oahu, central and eastern communities including Honolulu, Kaneohe, Pearl City, Aiea, Mililani and Wahiawa are at risk for flooded roads and overflowing drainages. Water could cover low-lying streets in Kalihi, Moanalua and Salt Lake during the early morning commute. Landslides remain possible along steep terrain near Kaaawa, Waikane and Waiahole.

On Kauai, the Hanalei River rose quickly overnight, reaching levels that typically force closure of Kuhio Highway near the Hanalei River Bridge. Officials warn that additional heavy rain could shut down more roadways islandwide, especially in windward and mountainous areas.

Residents should avoid streams, culverts and low crossings, even if they appear dry. Drivers must not attempt to cross water-covered roads. Additional extensions are possible if rainfall continues beyond sunrise.
