Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Drivers across the Delaware Valley could lose safe travel conditions as early as 4 a.m. Sunday as heavy snow spreads north and west, setting the stage for up to 16 inches in parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey by Monday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, Winter Storm Warnings begin at staggered times Sunday morning and remain in effect until 6 p.m. Monday. Snow starts as early as 4 a.m. in northern and central New Jersey, 7 a.m. in the Philadelphia metro and 10 a.m. across southern New Jersey and northern Delaware. Totals range from 8 to 16 inches in New Jersey, 10 to 16 inches in southeast Pennsylvania and 8 to 14 inches in New Castle and Kent counties, Delaware. Snowfall rates may exceed 2 inches per hour Sunday afternoon and night.

Interstates 95, 76, 295 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike could see rapid accumulation, especially near Philadelphia, Norristown, West Chester and Doylestown. In New Jersey, Routes 1, 9 and 206, along with the New Jersey Turnpike, may become snow-covered quickly. Wilmington and Dover face deteriorating road conditions by late Sunday morning.

Wind gusts up to 40 mph will create blowing and drifting snow, lowering visibility and increasing the risk of downed tree limbs. Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stock vehicles with emergency supplies and check 511 for updated road conditions.

Snow will intensify Sunday afternoon and continue through the Monday evening commute. Additional advisories remain possible as the storm evolves.
