Weaverville, California – Heavy snow and strong winds will target higher elevations of Northern Trinity County beginning 10 p.m. Saturday, with up to 10 inches expected above 4,500 feet by Sunday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday to 4 p.m. PST Sunday for areas including Highway 3 over Scott Mountain. Snow accumulations could reach 10 inches, while wind gusts may peak near 55 mph along exposed ridges and passes.

Travel could be very difficult.

Highway 3 at Scott Mountain may become snow-covered overnight into Sunday, and chain controls are likely. Blowing snow combined with strong winds could sharply reduce visibility and lead to temporary road closures. Gusty winds may also damage trees and power lines in higher terrain.

Drivers should delay mountain travel if possible and carry chains, extra food, water, and a flashlight if travel is necessary. Caltrans road conditions are available by calling 511 before departure.

Snow will taper late Sunday afternoon, but slick conditions may persist into Sunday evening. The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday through 4 p.m. Sunday for elevations above 4,500 feet.
