New Bedford, Massachusetts – Heavy snow could overspread south coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island late Sunday night, with more than 6 inches possible before the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Sunday night through Monday evening for southern Bristol and Plymouth counties, Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, and Washington and Newport counties in Rhode Island. Snow totals exceeding 6 inches are possible, with periods of reduced visibility approaching whiteout conditions.
Travel may become treacherous and potentially life-threatening.
Major roadways including Route 6 across Cape Cod, Interstate 195 near New Bedford and Fall River, and coastal routes through Newport and Narragansett could become snow-covered before sunrise Monday. Ferry operations to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket may face delays if snowfall rates intensify.
Residents should review travel plans and prepare vehicles before late Sunday night. MassDOT and RIDOT crews are expected to pretreat primary highways ahead of the storm’s arrival.
Snow may persist into Monday evening before tapering from west to east, with slick road conditions lingering after sunset. The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late Sunday night through Monday evening as snowfall projections are refined.
