Riverhead, New York – Heavy snow and strong winds could create near-blizzard conditions across Suffolk County beginning Sunday morning, with up to 13 inches possible before the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon for northwest, northeast, southwest, and southeast Suffolk County. Snowfall totals between 10 and 13 inches are possible, with wind gusts up to 45 mph producing blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.
Travel could become very difficult to impossible.
Major roadways including the Long Island Expressway, Sunrise Highway, and Route 25 may become snow-covered late Sunday into early Monday. Gusty winds combined with heavy wet snow could bring down tree branches and lead to scattered power outages, particularly in coastal communities from Babylon to Montauk.
Residents should prepare for possible blizzard conditions and adjust travel plans before Sunday morning. LIPA and PSEG Long Island crews are expected to monitor outage potential as winds increase.
Snow and strong winds may persist into Monday afternoon before gradually tapering, with blowing snow lingering along exposed east-west roadways. The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon as forecasters assess the potential for a Blizzard Warning.
