Binghamton, NY – A thin glaze of ice could coat bridges and hilltops by 5 a.m. Friday, creating slick travel across parts of the Southern Tier and northeast Pennsylvania just as the morning commute ramps up.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 5 a.m. to noon Friday for Broome, Tioga, Chenango, Cortland and Madison counties in New York, along with Bradford, Susquehanna, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Wayne and Wyoming counties in Pennsylvania. Forecasters expect up to 1 inch of snow and sleet with ice accumulations around one-tenth of an inch. Higher elevations could see the most icing.

Roads in Binghamton, Cortland, Oneida and Norwich may turn slick before sunrise, especially along I-81, I-88 and Route 17. In Pennsylvania, elevated stretches near Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton face similar risks, particularly on untreated secondary roads and overpasses.

PennDOT and NYSDOT crews are expected to pre-treat major highways, but even a light glaze can trigger spinouts. Drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance and allow extra time between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. Residents should also watch for icy sidewalks and steps.

Conditions should improve after noon as temperatures rise, though isolated slick spots may linger on shaded roads. Travelers can check 511NY or 511PA for the latest updates before heading out.
