Goodland, Kansas – Travel across northwest Kansas and eastern Colorado could turn hazardous within hours Tuesday as 65 mph wind gusts whip across open highways and kick up blowing dust.
According to the National Weather Service in Goodland, a High Wind Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. MST /11 a.m. CST/ to 5 p.m. MST /6 p.m. CST/ Tuesday for Yuma, Kit Carson and Cheyenne counties in Colorado and Sherman, Thomas, Wallace, Logan, Gove, Greeley and Wichita counties in Kansas. West winds will sustain between 35 and 45 mph, with peak gusts up to 65 mph expected during the late morning through mid-afternoon.
Communities including Goodland, Colby, Burlington, Wray, Oakley and Sharon Springs will see the strongest winds during peak daytime heating. Sustained speeds near 40 mph could push high-profile vehicles across lanes on Interstate 70 and U.S. 36, especially in exposed rural stretches.
Blowing dust may sharply reduce visibility over short distances, creating sudden white-brownout conditions. Rapid changes in air quality could aggravate asthma and other respiratory conditions.
Residents should secure outdoor furniture, trash bins and farm equipment before late morning. Drivers of semis, campers and box trucks should consider delaying travel until winds ease after 6 p.m. Tuesday. Additional advisories remain possible if wind speeds trend higher.
