Texarkana, Texas – Drivers across the Ark-La-Tex region are waking up to near-zero visibility as dense fog cuts sightlines to one quarter mile or less, creating dangerous conditions on major highways before sunrise Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. CST for southwest Arkansas, including Miller and Lafayette counties, north central Louisiana including Caddo and Bossier parishes, and northeast Texas including Bowie, Cass and Harrison counties. Visibility may drop below a quarter mile at times, especially in low-lying and rural areas.
Travel along I-20 between Shreveport and Marshall, I-49 near Shreveport, and I-30 around Texarkana has become increasingly hazardous as fog thickens overnight. TXDOT, ARDOT and LADOTD crews are monitoring bridges and overpasses, where temperatures hovering near freezing could create isolated slick spots.
Motorists should reduce speed immediately in dense fog, switch to low-beam headlights and increase following distance. Avoid sudden braking on elevated roadways where moisture may freeze first.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve by mid-morning as temperatures rise and fog lifts, but pockets of low visibility may linger beyond 9 a.m. Additional advisories could be issued if fog redevelops later Monday.
