Huntington, West Virginia – Drivers along the Ohio-West Virginia border are dealing with near-zero visibility early Monday as dense fog reduces sightlines to one quarter mile or less, creating immediate hazards for the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service, Dense Fog Advisories remain in effect until 10 a.m. EST for southeast Ohio, including Athens, Gallipolis and Ironton, and across western West Virginia, including Huntington, Parkersburg and Point Pleasant. Visibility may drop below a quarter mile at times, particularly along the Ohio River and in low-lying valleys.
ODOT reports fluctuating visibility along US-52, State Route 7 and portions of US-33 near the river corridor. In West Virginia, WVDOT crews are monitoring I-64 and WV-2, where patchy freezing fog could create slick spots on bridges and elevated roadways as temperatures hover near 32 degrees.
Motorists should slow down immediately when entering dense fog, use low-beam headlights and allow extra distance between vehicles. Avoid sudden braking on bridges, where thin ice can form first if surface temperatures dip to freezing.
Fog is expected to gradually lift by late morning as temperatures rise, but pockets of low visibility could linger along the river. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions fail to improve.
