Minneapolis, Minn. – Drivers across the Twin Cities should watch for rapid snowmelt and ponding along I-94 and I-35W as temperatures surge into the upper 50s and near 60 degrees through Tuesday afternoon, accelerating the February thaw.
According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, mostly sunny and mild conditions will continue through Monday with highs ranging from 45 to 60 degrees and overnight lows in the 30s and low 40s. Tuesday stays mild and breezy before a stronger system moves in midweek.
Rain becomes likely Wednesday, with an 80% chance of precipitation and highs cooling into the mid-30s to mid-50s. Wet pavement and standing water could develop along I-494, Highway 100 and US-169, especially during the Wednesday evening commute. Storm drains clogged by lingering snow and ice may worsen localized street flooding.
By Thursday, colder air pushes back into Minnesota. Highs fall into the 20s and 30s with a 20% chance of light snow. Any leftover moisture on untreated bridges along I-694 and I-94 could refreeze late Thursday night as lows dip into the teens and 20s.
Residents should clear neighborhood storm drains where possible, slow down on water-covered roads and prepare for a temperature swing of nearly 30 degrees by late week. Additional updates are expected as the midweek rain system approaches and colder air settles in.
