Norfolk, Va. – Drivers across Hampton Roads should prepare for ponding water and reduced visibility as up to 1.25 inches of rain falls along I-64 and the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel corridor between late Sunday morning and 6 a.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, rain will overspread southeast Virginia late Sunday morning, becoming steady and occasionally moderate through the afternoon and evening. Most communities, including Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, are expected to receive between 0.5 and 1.25 inches of rainfall, with locally higher totals possible in heavier bands.
The heaviest rain is expected Sunday afternoon into late evening, which could create standing water on I-264, I-664 and low-lying stretches of US-58. Drivers using the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel and Midtown Tunnel should anticipate slower travel as water collects near tunnel approaches.
Farther inland toward Richmond along I-95 and US-460, rainfall totals will be similar, though minor street flooding is more likely in urban and poor-drainage areas. Gusty winds are not expected to be severe, but steady rainfall may reduce visibility below one mile at times.
Residents should clear storm drains where safe, avoid driving through flooded roadways and allow extra stopping distance. Rain tapers off early Monday morning, with gradual clearing expected by Monday afternoon.
Temperatures will rebound into the 60s and low 70s by midweek as drier air settles in, but additional updates may be issued if rainfall totals trend higher overnight.
