Garden City, Kansas – Drivers across southwest Kansas are navigating reduced visibility early Sunday, with fog cutting sightlines to as little as one mile before a surge of 60 mph wind gusts threatens travel by Tuesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Sunday for Finney, Haskell, Seward and Scott counties, including Garden City, Liberal, Scott City and Sublette. Visibility between one and two miles may shift quickly, especially along U.S. Highway 83 and U.S. Highway 50, creating hazardous driving conditions during the morning commute.
Attention then turns to Tuesday afternoon, when a High Wind Watch takes effect. Southwest winds are expected to increase to 30 to 45 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph possible across open fields and along elevated roadways. Areas near grain elevators and tall agricultural structures could see the strongest crosswinds. Blowing dust may reduce visibility below one mile at times, particularly in rural stretches.
Secure loose outdoor equipment before Tuesday. High-profile vehicles should avoid unnecessary travel during peak gusts. Sporadic power outages are possible as winds intensify.
Additional advisories could be issued if wind speeds trend higher approaching Tuesday afternoon.
