White Plains, Maryland – A man was fatally shot by deputies Wednesday afternoon in White Plains.
According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, the officer-involved shooting occurred around 2:30 p.m. Feb. 11 in the area of Newport Circle and Cobbler Place as deputies attempted to serve an active arrest warrant and protective order related to escalating domestic incidents.
Authorities said that as officers approached, the individual allegedly pulled out a large machete and advanced toward them with the weapon raised. Two deputies discharged their firearms, striking the individual.
Officers immediately rendered medical aid, including CPR, until emergency medical personnel arrived. Despite those efforts, the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The deputies involved were wearing clothing identifying them as Charles County Sheriff’s officers and were equipped with body-worn cameras, according to the agency. Investigators later determined the subject was wearing a tactical vest with what appeared to be body armor.
In accordance with Maryland law, the Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID) was notified and has assumed responsibility for the investigation. The IID is tasked with investigating police-involved fatal incidents statewide.
Consistent with department policy, the deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Officials have not released the name of the deceased individual. Additional updates will be provided by the Independent Investigations Division as more information becomes available.
The incident may be of particular concern to residents and commuters in the Newport Circle and Cobbler Place area.
