Madison, Wisconsin – A reported firearm threat near East Campus Mall prompted a swift police response and arrest Tuesday afternoon, avoiding broader campus disruption.

According to the UW–Madison Police Department, officers were dispatched around 1:55 p.m. Tuesday to the intersection of West Johnson Street and East Campus Mall after receiving a report of an individual who had allegedly made threats toward another person near a bus stop.

Investigators said the suspect and the victim had been riding the same bus and exited at the same stop. A verbal altercation allegedly followed near the bus stop, during which the suspect displayed a firearm he was carrying and made verbal threats. No shots were fired.

As officers responded, police said the suspect discarded the firearm into a nearby trash can. The weapon was quickly recovered, and officers took the suspect into custody without incident.

The suspect was identified as Marcus Morgan, 46, of Madison. Police said he was booked into the Dane County Jail on tentative charges of disorderly conduct while armed, carrying a concealed weapon, and resisting or obstructing an officer. He is not affiliated with the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

UWPD said that due to the rapid response by officers and dispatchers, the situation was resolved quickly and did not meet the criteria for issuing a campus-wide WiscAlert.

No injuries were reported, and police said there is no ongoing threat related to the incident. The investigation remains ongoing, and formal charges will be reviewed by the Dane County District Attorney’s Office.
